Ghost nets, i.e. lost fishing gear, are one of the main sources of plastic pollution in the seas and oceans. They also become deadly traps for fish, birds and marine mammals. The aim of OPERATION GHOST is to contribute to solving this problem on a local scale, in the Baltic Sea. As a result of the project, we retrieved 2,400 square meters of nylon nets - potentially the most dangerous for the marine environment.
Find out more about the project and the problem in our new documentary film!
Plastic is harmful for the environment and our health ? this is a well-known fact. Despite this, between 4.8 to 12.7 million tonnes of plastic still end up in the seas and oceans. To help the Baltic in fighting this problem the MARE Foundation installs sea bins in Baltic ports. These bins are able to collect up to 1.400 kg of litter annually.
